“Giessbach for the Swiss People” truly is “a unique project the like of which has never been seen before” – an unparalleled example of collaboration and team-work. Tens of thousands of people responded to Franz Weber’s call in the 1980s, and committed themselves to the preservation of the unique Giessbach estate.
The non-profit Giessbach Foundation was established by Franz Weber in 1983 in order to save the historically valuable Grandhotel from the Belle Epoque period from demolition, and preserve this beautiful piece of heritage above Lake Brienz for the people of Switzerland. Thanks to Franz Weber and his huge fund-raising campaign, the support of the canton of Bern and the community of Brienz, the Foundation was able to purchase the estate and preserve it for future generations.
